While consulting lawyers on economic issues regarding cases they were handling for corporate clients I was asked to work on a project on the side of a pornographic magazine publisher. I was part of a team of 3 people who were given the job of calculating the damages this publisher is entitled to from an Internet search engine that allegedly misused the copy write of the publisher.
Working on the project put me in an awkward ethical situation as I have serious moral objections to pornography and personally believe it to be an addictive evil that harms all who come in contact with it. On the other hand, the copy write laws should be applied to everyone equally to maintain the legal structure that protects my rights.
In the end, I used the legal argument to justify my working on the case, but I believe, since I took no oath to work for clients whose morals I did not agree with, I should have asked to be reassigned to another project.
