Each seminar is conducted jointly by:

- Hugues Minguet, a Benedictine monk, previously a lawyer with FIDAL, founder of the Institute “Sens et Croissance”, and active since many years as a consultant for large corporations and coaching top executives;

- And a recognized top business leader with international experience and exposure to difficult ethical situations, usually Vincent Schürr, CEO in the electrical industry and then serial entrepreneur, or Jean-François de Lavison, Top executive in the pharmaceutical industry and consultant, founder and CEO of Ahimsa Partners.

A guest speaker also participates in the closing session of the seminar. It can be a member of the Research Unit of the Institute “Sens et Croissance” or a well known business leader, offering his(her) vision and experience of ethics in business. Among recent speakers: Jérome Bédier, Secrétaire Général Groupe Carrefour, Brunot Rousset, CEO of April and Evolem, Philippe Wahl, CEO La Banque Postale…

Overview

This off-campus (see below) seminar aims at developing:

- an improved awareness of ethical issues and stakes in the daily business practice

- an ability to question one’s own responsibility as a company manager

- some guidelines to structure personal options of action and to make complex decisions

During 3 days in the distinctive context of the remote monastery of Sereys (Haute-Loire), attendees will experiment a truly different way to stand back, to think and exchange experience of management practices and their consequences.

Since its inception, this one-of-a-kind experience is listed among the “must-have” of the MBA Program electives, and could almost be deemed as unmissable…

Venue

The seminar takes place in the monastery of Sereys (Haute Loire). It is however a non-confessional seminar. All kinds of thoughts and opinions are welcome and everyone is invited to participate in the exchanges.

The scheduling of the sessions takes into account the periods of the monastic day.

Learning outcomes

Structured to be fully interactive, the three-day seminar is strongly shaped by the personal questions and past and current professional experiences of the attendees.

It also brings up for discussion actual business cases with “ethical issues” and proposes some guidelines to help making multi-factors decisions in a complex environment.

Key topics

Part 1:What is Ethics ?

Moral and Ethics ? Philosophical and practical approach

Four ways to face the moral code.

Part 2: The process of complex decisions

- measurable (or techno-scientific)

- organizational and political

- quality of behaviours

- quality of objectives

Part 3: Serving persons

Seven keys of management to care for persons in companies

Stakes and topics associated with ethics and business performance are extensively discussed in the seminar. Among issues often raised by attendees:

Is there a sense of universal ethics? What are the underlying roots of ethics?

As a manager, whom do I have to serve (CEO/ boss, shareholders, employees, customers,…)? How to deal with conflicting interests?

How to balance company interest and personal interest? Role of money in decision making. Should there be / can there be any rules?

How can I resist pressure? Can I be / should I be ethically flexible?

Is there any corporate social responsibility? What is the cost of ethics? And of non–ethical behaviours? Is sustainable development linked with ethics?
